Michelle Brown, MA, LMFT, LMFTS

I believe that counseling is more than problem solving and advice-giving. Counseling creates a safe and supportive space where people can sort through their thoughts and feelings; a space where they can make new meaning of their experiences so they can heal, find renewed hope, and cope with life's challenges. I recognize that everyone's story, struggles, and goals are unique and I'm committed to helping people find their way amidst their personal trials.

Experience

I am a marriage and family therapist with more than twelve years of counseling experience. Following graduate school, I devoted five years to counseling adolescents and their families at a psychiatric residential treatment facility. During this time I advanced from Therapist to Supervisor to Clinical Director before stepping down from full-time agency work to launch my own private practice.

Education

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor (License #6998)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (License #4552)
  • Master of Arts, Counseling, Webster University - 2008
  • Bachelor of Arts, Art Education, University of Florida - 2005
  • Associate of Arts, Psychology, SFCC (Gainesville, FL) - 2000

Areas of Specialty and Training

I specialize in couples counseling, family therapy and individual counseling with adolescents and adults. I work best with clients that are hoping to improve personal relationships, adjust to life transitions, manage the pain of grief and loss, cope with challenging circumstances, and heal past hurts.

  • Advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT)
  • Level I and II training in the Gottman Method approach to couples therapy
  • Certified in the essentials of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Rostered Clinician
  • Trained facilitator of the PREPARE/ENRICH program for premarital counseling
  • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Supervisor (South Carolina)
  • Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT)

Life Outside the Office

Life balance is important to me and I try to be intentional in finding time for the things I value most. When I'm not in the office I devote time to connecting with my husband of fourteen years, playing with my young son as he explores the world, and pouring into my personal relationships. I enjoy all sorts of creative expression (art, gardening, cooking, journaling) and I absolutely love getting out in nature for a walk, a jog, a hike, or simply to watch the birds in my own backyard.
